CHENNAI: Depressed over illness that restricted them within the four walls of their home, an elderly couple committed suicide at Selaiyur on Tuesday, police said.
Anandan, 73 and Ganga Devi, 63, were residing on Raja Iyer Street in Selaiyur near Tambaram along with their son Jayakumaran, his wife Asha Devi and their children.
While Anandan had vision problems, his wife was bed-ridden due to an illness, which stopped the couple from leaving the house and meeting their relatives, leaving them depressed.
On Tuesday, their son Jayakumaran left for work as usual. After their daughter-in-law Asha Devi left home to pick up her kids from school in the evening, the couple who were alone at home committed suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan.
On returning home, Asha Devi found her parents-in-law hanging. Police recovered their bodies and sent them to Chromepet Government Hospital for postmortem. A case has been registered and further investigations are underway.
