Chennai police rescue more than 6,000 flood-affected people

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) along with the District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) have rescued 6,560 flood-affected people.

People were provided with food, drinking water and other essential items. The police had distributed 21,967 food packets for those in need thus far, a statement from the GCP said on Wednesday.

Ambulances were sent to pregnant women and others who required medical assistance.

The police in coordination with Greater Chennai Corporation, the highways department and the fire and rescue services department removed 465 uprooted trees and ensured free flow of traffic.

As many as 489 vehicles which were stuck in flood were removed and kept at safer places.

An emergency operation centre set up at the Greater Chennai Police Commissionerate received around 1,500 calls for help.
