CHENNAI: A constable with the suburban police caught a bike thief near Chembarambakkam on Saturday. The man, it was later revealed, was wanted for stealing at least five motorbikes at various locales in the city.
According to police officials, Constable Sethu was on duty at the Nazarethpet police outpost near the Chembarambakkam Lake, when he spotted a man pushing a two-wheeler around 12.30 am.
When he approached the man and asked him why he was roaming around at the unearthly hour, his answers were not satisfactory. He man reportedly kept contradicting himself.
Realising that the man was up to no good, Sethu called in re-enforcements and informed the two beat officers, Parthibhan and Ezhumalai, who were patrolling the area in their motorbikes. Before the officers could arrive, the man dropped the motorbike and attempted to run away but Sethu caught and held him till help arrived.
During questioning at Nazarethpet police station, it was found that the man, identified as Venkatesan, was responsible for stealing at least five bikes in Vadapalani, Besant Nagar, Guindy, Saidapet and Poonamalee. A case was registered and Venkatesan remanded in judicial custody.
A senior official said, "The constable's quick reactions should be lauded. Not everyone takes the trouble and interrogates in such a thorough manner, especially late at night. Because of his efforts, we have caught a man wanted in various cases of theft."
