Chennai police rescue more than 6,000 flood-affected people

The Greater Chennai Police (GCP) along with the District Disaster Response Team (DDRT) have rescued 6,560 flood-affected people. People were provided with food, drinking water and other essential items. The police had distributed 21,967 food packets for those in need thus far, a statement from the GCP said on Wednesday. Ambulances were sent to pregnant women and others who required medical assistance. Read more

Parts of Chennai remain inundated, relief efforts expedited

Residents grappled with stagnant water and power disruption in parts of the city and its suburbs on Wednesday, two days after Cyclone Michuang wreaked havoc in the metropolis and neighbouring districts, even as civic agency personnel stepped up relief and rehabilitation efforts. The cyclone-triggered heavy rainfall had led to inundation in localities including Velachery and Tambaram. On Wednesday too, people were seen leaving their homes in the areas surrounded with water to safer zones, carrying their children and wading through stagnant water. They called for help, including pressing more boats to ferry people to higher ground. Chief Minister M K Stalin visited some of the affected areas and distributed food and essential commodities to people put up at a relief centre in the city. He inspected activities undertaken by the city civic body to drain water.

Tamil Nadu chief minister M K Stalin on Tuesday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to release Rs 5,060 crore to take up relief measures in the cyclone-battered state. He also requested a visit by a team of the Union government to assess the affected areas. An official release on Wednesday said the chief minister made the demand in a letter to PM Modi. Stalin said the districts of Chennai, Thiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu had witnessed extreme heavy rainfall triggered by cyclone Michaung on December 2, 3, and 4. The cyclonic storm had caused a huge impact in the four districts, especially the Greater Chennai Corporation. “The livelihood of lakhs of people has been affected. The chief minister has explained these in detail and sought immediate interim relief Rs 5,060 crore under certain heads,” said an official release.

Supply of essential items such as milk, drinking water and petrol was affected in most parts of Chennai on Tuesday, allowing retailers to sell them at excess price. Government-owned Aavin’s dairy plant in Ambattur, which usually supplies 5 lakh litres of milk, got completely submerged thereby affecting supply in Chennai and efforts have been made to source milk from the neighbouring districts, said Mano Thangaraj, dairy development minister of warning strict action against dealers and lorry drivers, who refused to coordinate. Despite efforts, Aavin milk packets hardly reached most residents in southern and western parts of the city and many tea shops, which started opening in the evening, here bought milk from private vendors by paying up to Rs.100 per litre. This is double the usual price. Similarly, there was a shortage of drinking water cans and trucks started selling 10-litre cans at Rs.60 to Rs.70 instead of Rs.40.

Nearly 24 hours after Cyclone Michaung left Chennai inundated, about 60% of the areas received electricity till Tuesday night. Tangedco officials cited waterlogging as a major blockade for not being able to restore power supply. With the power outage, Chennai’s power demand plunged to 100 MW on Monday morning compared to an average 3,000MW4,000MW. By Tuesday evening the demand rose to 1,500 MW, officials said. In core city areas like Mylapore, RK Salai, Chetpet, Kilpauk, West Mambalam and T Nagar, power supply did not resume entirely as the streets were inundated with at least three-foot-deep water. Parts of Pulianthope, Otteri, Madipakkam, Nanganallur, NSK Nagar in Arumbakkam, MM Colony in Aminjikarai, Saraswathi Colony, AGS Colony, Ambedkar Nagar and EB Colony in Adambakkam, most of Avadi and surroundings, Journalist Colony and Tiruvalluvar Nagar in Tiruvanmiyur are some of the areas where power supply couldn’t be restored due to waterlogging.

AP Cyclone News: Cyclone Michaung’s landfall in AP throws life out of gear

Cyclone Michaung made landfall on the Andhra Pradesh coast near Bapatla on Tuesday afternoon, accompanied by intense rain and fierce winds reaching 100kmph, causing widespread devastation and affecting crores of people. The storm claimed the life of a child in Andhra Pradesh. Following its landfall, the cyclone wreaked havoc on standing crops, primarily paddy, causing extensive damage to thousands of acres, uprooting hundreds of trees and electricity poles. Around 10,000 people were evacuated to safer locations. After landfall, India Meteorological Department said the cyclone raged for about three hours, bringing strong gales and heavy rain to the region. Subsequently, it moved northwards and weakened into a cyclonic storm on Tuesday night. It is expected to further weaken into a depression on Wednesday, triggering heavy rain in parts of north coastal AP, Telangana and southern Odisha. Sun shone over Chennai’s azure skies on Tuesday, a day after cyclone Michaung ravaged the city and three neighbouring districts, but many neighbourhoods remained under water. The storm that dumped 46cm of rain in two days — December 3 and 4 — flooded thousands of buildings, homes, cars, two-wheelers, gensets and gadgets. Rescue and relief workers struggled to reach several lakh residents left without safe drinking water, food, electricity and connectivity. In some neighbourhoods, government agencies airdropped food, while volunteers joined them in taking food and essen tials by boats. Classified a super-cyclone, Michaung claimed 16 lives and displaced several lakh people. While more than 61,000 people have been accommodated at government-run centres, many families have checked into serviced apartments and budget hotels as they faced shortage of water, essentials and electricity.

The quantum of water being released from the Chembarambakkam lake in Chennai was increased to 6,000 cusecs on Tuesday evening as the water level reached 23.45 feet. It is for the first time after 2015 that the water level in the Chembarambakkam lake crossed 23 feet.

NLC India Limited (NLCIL) has dispatched 16 giant high-capacity pumps to Chennai, which has been flooded due to excessive rainfall under the influence of cyclone Michaung. The company also dispatched the required number of engineers and technicians from its three mines to Chennai to assist the Greater Chennai Corporation teams in draining stagnated water. These powerful motor pumps are used in the mines to pump out stagnant water quickly, according to a release from the company.
