CHENNAI: A Chennai Corporation employee and his 65-year-old father died after their two-wheeler was knocked down by a Metropolitan Transport Corporation bus near Tambaram on the Velachery Main Road early on Saturday morning. The bus driver was arrested.
The police said K Murali, 41, of West Tambaram, who worked as a bill collector in Chennai Corporation at Velachery, was going on his bike with his father V Krishnamoorthy, a security guard in a private company, when the incident occurred.
At Selaiyur, Murali tried to take a sharp turn to avoid going into a small pit on the road side when MTC bus V51, which was proceeding to Velachery, hit their vehicle from behind and the two fell to the ground, a traffic police officer told The Times of India.
“They were thrown off the vehicle and a fell a few metres away. Krishnamoorthy, who suffered severe head injuries, died on the spot,” said M Veeramani, inspector of traffic police (investigation). Several members of the public, who were in the vicinity, then rushed Murali to Chromepet Government hospital were he was declared ‘brought dead’. He was not wearing a helmet.
According to the police, Murali was proceeding to drop his father at his workplace in Selaiyur around 7.45am. MTC driver D Soundarajan tried to apply the brakes to avoid hitting the two-wheeler in front but apparently failed, the police said. “The accident is said to have happened due to brake failure but we are investigating further,” a police officer said.
