CHENNAI: A 30-year-old man killed his friend who was in a relationship with his wife, near Tiruvallur on Thursday night.
The Urapakkam police said Venkatesan, 32, who worked in a factory, had an affair with Velu's wife Meenakshi. Velu learned about the relationship and confronted Venkatesan, who dismissed it as a rumour. But when people in the village started talking about the affair, Velu plotted to murder Venkatesan, an investigating officer said.

"Velu invited Venkatesan for a drink near a lake on Thursday night," the officer said. "Once Venkatesan was drunk, Velu pulled out a knife and slit his throat."
He said Velu was on the run.
Venkatesan became close to Velu's wife, a 32-year-old political functionary in Urapakkam village, during regular visits to their house. Velu cautioned his wife and Venkatesan, and asked them to end the relationship. Venkatesan's relatives had also advised him to keep away from Meenakshi, who had two children. Venkatesan denied that he had anything to do with Meenakshi.
"Matters came to a head when residents of Urapakkam began to talk about Meenakshi's relationship with Venkatesan," the officer said. "Velu told some of them that he was angry about the affair and embarrassed by his wife."
A few days prior to the murder, Velu caught Venkatesan and Meenakshi together. An enraged Velu decided to kill Venkatesan.
Police have formed a special team to nab Velu and detained his wife for questioning.
