Chennai: Greater Chennai Traffic police have begun a special drive against footboard travelling and have been instructed to collect the identity of school and college students found doing so across the city. They would send letters to the college or school authorities to initiate action against such students.
Police commissioner Shankar Jiwal said, “We are conducting a special drive for five days a week to prevent footboard travel by school and college students on buses and trains.

To make it more effective, we are summoning parents of college students indulging in unruly behaviour on public buses. They would be initially warned where we also tell them that if a criminal case is booked, their future will be spoiled.”
The officials have been asked to collect the details of the students travelling in footboard and also those who indulge in unruly behavior. After collecting the details, a report would be sent to the colleges or schools where they study after which the school management would have to initiate action against them. While the MTC Crew have been instructed to halt buses at the roadside and call up the police in case students refuse to listen to their requests.
The checks will be mainly conducted on the routes where schools and colleges are located. Police said that they will also hold counselling sessions in colleges and schools, warning them of the dangers of traveling on footboard.
