CHENNAI: Two new special officers, who would be commissioners for the two newly carved out police commissionerates, were named by the
Tamil Nadu government on Friday. While ADGP M Ravi will be Tambaram special officer, ADGP Sandeep Rai Rathore will head Avadi.
The two officers are appointed as the special officers as a part of trifurcation of the Greater Chennai city police commissionerate.
The officers are expected to preside over finalisation of jurisdiction, sharing of infrastructure and other related developments required for full-fledged commissionerates.
On September 13, chief minister M K Stalin announced in the state assembly that two new commissionerates would be created.
Ravi, a 1991 batch IPS officer, is a native of Dindigul. He has an MSc degree and doctorate. Rathore, who is a 1992-batch IPS officer, is a native of New Delhi. He holds MA and M Phil degrees.
An order issued by the state additional home secretary S K Prabhakar also said inspector-general of police Albin Dinesh Modak would hold the additional in-charge of the additional director-general of police of the economic offences wing (EOW).
In 2008, the M Karunanidhi-led state government had bifurcated the Chennai city police and a suburban commissionerate with St Thomas Mount as headquarters was formed. S R Jangid was appointed as the first suburban police commissioner. But when the AIADMK-led government assumed office in 2011, this was revoked and a Greater Chennai City Police was created with one police commissioner.
