Driverless trial run

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) conducted a driverless train trial on Monday along Corridor 4 of its Phase 2 project. The train was operated beyond Mullai Thottam up to Porur Junction at a speed of 40 kmph.

Stretch and viaduct

The 10km viaduct section connects Poonamallee Bypass with Porur Junction. The Poonamallee Metro Depot is the key coordination hub during this trial phase.

Officials inspect trial

CMRL Managing Director M A Siddique, along with directors from various departments, inspected the trial run. They reviewed the train’s performance and alignment with project goals.

Milestone in Phase 2

Siddique said the extended trials marked a crucial milestone in Phase 2 and demonstrated CMRL’s commitment to fast-tracking project timelines.

Testing safety standards

Dynamic tests during the trial aim to evaluate safety parameters and passenger comfort standards, helping progress the corridor toward public readiness.

More trials ahead

CMRL confirmed that Stage 1 trials will continue in the coming weeks, with the agency aiming to open the corridor for public use at the earliest.

First run recap

The first Phase 2 trial was conducted on March 20 on a 2km stretch between Poonamallee and Mullai Thottam, using the same driverless train at 25 kmph.
