Students, faculty members protest against NEET protest rages on

CHENNAI: Protests and demonstrations by students against the

National Eligibility cum Entrance Test

(NEET) continued on Monday.

Students from different colleges expressed their anger against NEET being conducted in the state. Hundreds of students from Aalim Mohammed Salegh College of Engineering in Avadi, who began their protests on Friday, attempted to march to the Indian Air Force building nearby. But they were curtailed to hold protest within the campus. “We wanted to hold protests near any government building to draw attention to our demands. We do not want NEET to be conducted in the state, especially after it cost the life of a student,” said Vinod, a protester. The college worked only for a half a day on Monday.

Meanwhile, a number of faculty members also held a press meet to express their displeasure over the ‘divide being created by NEET’. They alleged that just like caste, religion and language, NEET was also being used as a tool to create a divide among students and to prevent the economically weaker sections from coming up. They demanded that the ordinance passed by the Tamil Nadu government should be given presidential assent and not be delayed further.

Professor Ramu Manivannan of Madras University and former state planning commission vice chairman M Naganathan spoke at the protest meet.
