CHENNAI: The city suburban police on Friday arrested three youngsters involved in waylaying people and committing crime in Madhavaram and surrounding areas. Srinivasan (25) of Perambur, and Anand (21) and Sindu (21) of Kolathur were arrested when they were trying to escape after robbing a person in Manjambakkam, Madhavaram.
According to police, after many complaints were received about a gang waylaying people in Madhavaram, Chenani suburban police commissioner S R Jangid formed a special team, which included Madhavaram crime inspector, Rueben.
In an effort to track down the culprits, intensive patrolling was conducted. On Friday, police were driving through various streets in the locality. At 6pm, the three men tried to rob K Ramu of Burma Nagar in Madhavaram who was returning home after work. They grabbed his cellphone and Rs 500 in cash and tried to flee in an autorickshaw.
Onlookers alerted the police, and Rueben and his team reached the spot quickly. Srinivasan, Anand and Sindu were nabbed. During interrogation, they admitted robbing four others in Madhavaram.
Eleven sovereigns of gold jewellery, two cellphones, an autorickshaw and two motorcycles were recovered from them. The three have been remanded to judicial custody.
