Coimbatore Home Guards manning traffic to get white uniforms

COIMBATORE: The police are planning to use more Home Guards to regulate traffic in the city. Police commissioner A Amalraj has also decided to provide white uniforms to Home Guards manning traffic.
"The white uniform will provide better visibility for Home Guards who are out on the streets regulating traffic,'' said Amalraj. Home guards have welcomed the decision.
In some parts of the state, the police have provided a distinct white uniform for Home Guards. Even in rural divisions of Home Guards, white uniforms were introduced about a year back. But this is the first time in Coimbatore city that white uniforms are provided to them. "White uniforms are very helpful. The primary benefit of white uniform is that home guards on traffic duty can be easily identified during nights which is not possible with khakhi uniforms,'' said Coimbatore rural area commander of home guards Balaji Raju, Home Guard area commander.
Though no time frame has been fixed for providing white uniforms to Home Guards, Amalraj assured that "they would be given soon".
The white shirts would be similar to those worn by traffic police. Amalraj said that around 425 home guards were working in Coimbatore of which more than 50 were deployed in several parts of the city to regulate traffic in the morning and evening along with traffic police personnel.
