Coimbatore police to revoke nighttime ban on major flyovers from today

Coimbatore: The city police is set to revoke the nighttime ban on motorists on major flyovers in the city from Saturday.The city police had closed four major flyovers at Gandhipuram, Ukkadam, Avinashi Road (GD Naidu), and Trichy Road to curb rash driving and racing. The ban was introduced on a trial basis on March 18, with the flyovers being closed from 10pm to 6am.According to police officials, several fatal and non-fatal accidents had been reported on these flyovers during late-night hours. Between October 2025 and March 2026, seven non-fatal accidents occurred on the newly constructed GD Naidu flyover on Avinashi Road. To address this, the flyovers were shut for motorists during night hours.Police said the move produced good results, as no fatal accidents were reported in the city during this period. However, some motorists and activists raised concerns that closing the flyovers caused traffic congestion in the city.Vivin, a private firm employee on Trichy Road, said he travels on the road every day and often sees youths speeding on the flyover. He said closing the flyover was a good idea but added that the police were shutting it too early. According to him, 10pm is a peak time for long-distance buses, and the closure was causing traffic congestion in the city. He suggested that authorities should consider closing the flyovers from 11pm or 11.30pm to 5am.
