Highways department begins work to install AI-based cameras on Coimbatore’s GD Naidu flyover
Coimbatore: The special project wing of the state highways has begun work to install AI-based surveillance cameras on the GD Naidu flyover to monitor traffic violations on the flyover. The flyover, longest in the state, was inaugurated by chief minister M K Stalin on Oct 9.
The 10.1km-long flyover from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins faced severe traffic congestion initially. As vehicle movement on the flyover decreased after a couple of weeks, the number of motorists involved in traffic violations on the flyover increased. Motorists riding at high speed and on the wrong side became rampant. Youths were also involved in speed bike races on the flyover during late night hours. Frequent non-fatal accidents were also reported on the flyover. To curb violations and accidents on the flyover, the highways department began work to install 44 AI-based surveillance cameras and 16 LED monitor screens on the flyover at a cost of Rs 3 crore. Divisional engineer of the special project wing of state highways V Samuthirakani said, "We have fixed two LED screens at the airport up-ramp. There are eight ramps in the stretch. Two screens will be fixed at each ramp, and 44 AI-based cameras will be installed. These cameras will detect speeding, triple riding, driving without a seat belt, and wrong-side driving. The violator's vehicle number and the violation they made will be displayed on the screens installed. These cameras will be linked to the RTO and police. Once a violation is detected, the challan will be prepared and sent to the vehicle owner," he said. He said cameras were procured and ready to install. The work will be completed by the end of Feb.Get the latest lifestyle updates on Times of India, along with Valentine's day wishes, messages and gift idea !
