Namakkal: A 16-year-old boy murdered an 18-year-old girl by slitting her throat near Namakkal on Friday. The incident took place when the girl rejected his proposal.
The deceased has been identified as C Abirami, 18, daughter of M Chandrasekar of Bothupatty in Namakkal district. She was studying teacher's training in a private college in the town and was in her second year.
On Thursday night, Chandrasekar's nephew Deepak, 16, (name changed) of Ayakkudi near Palani in Dindigul district came to Bodhupatty. He was studying in Class 11 in a private school in Ayakkudi.
It is learnt that Deepak had approached Abirami and urged her to marry him. "She informed about his proposal to her parents the same night," the Namakkal police said. Police also said that Chandrasekar and his wife Valarmathi did not approve of it and asked him to return home.
Deepak agreed to return to Ayakkudi on Friday morning. Chandrasekar went out to work on Friday morning and Valarmathi went to the local grocer's.
Deepak, who was staying with Abirami, attacked her and slit her throat using a sharp knife. Neighbours heard her scream and they rushed to the spot. Meanwhile, Deepak rushed out of the house with the knife and managed to flee the spot.
Neighbours found Abirami in a pool of blood. They immediately alerted the Namakkal town police based on which they rushed to the spot and initiated investigations. They sent the body to Namakkal district headquarters government hospital for postmortem.
A case was registered and further investigation is underway. A team has been formed to nab Deepak.
