Prisoner attempts suicide inside Coimbatore Central Prison

Coimbatore: A 25-year-old prisoner is battling for life after attempting suicide inside the Coimbatore Central Prison on Friday.Prison officials said R Jeevanantham, 25, from Sulur, had been arrested and remanded in judicial custody a few years ago in connection with an attempt-to-murder case.He was later released on bail but was arrested again in November 2025 after a court issued an arrest warrant.Officials said Jeevanantham attempted suicide in room 10 of block 22 of the Coimbatore Central Prison by hanging himself from an iron rod using his lungi.Fellow inmates noticed the incident and immediately raised an alarm, alerting prison guards. Jail personnel promptly rescued Jeevanantham and shifted him to the prison hospital for emergency first aid.On the recommendation of the prison medical officer, he was later shifted to Coimbatore Medical College Hospital, where he remains admitted.Based on a complaint lodged by jailor K Thirumalai, the Race Course police have registered a case to ascertain the reason behind the suicide attempt.
