COIMBATORE: This elections, he did not come riding a donkey or a bullock simply because the
Election Commission has strictly barred candidates from driving right into the election offices in cars or bullock carts. Yet, on the scorching Saturday morning, when filing of nominations for the assembly polls unfolded, Noor Mohammed managed to lend a comic touch to the fiercely serious democratic race on Tuesday.
With a lantern, pick axe and a mud-pot in hand and a turban around his head, Noor Mohammed came dressed like a farmer to the Coimbatore collectorate on Saturday morning. And his rustic costume immediately drew the attention of the passersby and the waiting media. Flashbulbs lit up, television mikes were thrust under his chin and the independent candidate, Noor Mohammed, got his few seconds of fame.
For Noor Mohammed, contesting polls is a comic habit. Every election, he will don a new costume and drive through the city roads in a spectacular manner, arriving on donkey or bullock cart, and file his nomination papers. "This is my 24th election as an independent candidate and every time I have a definite idea for my attire."
He has contested in various by-elections including Sathankulam assembly constituency near Tuticorin and surprised 25 candidates of various political parties by getting more votes and coming third, just behind the AIADMK and Congress.
