State seeks death penalty for convicts in Congress leader’s murder case

Cuttack: The state govt has moved the Orissa high court seeking confirmation of the death sentence awarded to five person by a trial court for killing Ramachandra Behera, a block chairman and Congress leader, in Keonjhar in 2019.The state govt’s application for confirmation of capital punishment to Sanjeev Kumar Prusty, Ajit Kumar Prusty, Aruna Prusty, Alekha Prusty and Purna Chandra Boitei was registered on March 11.But no judge has been assigned the case so far. Provisions of the law mandate the state govt to seek the high court’s nod, without which execution of the sentence cannot be carried out. On March 6, a sessions court in Anandapur convicted the accused who brutally murdered Behera in Ghasipura on March 25, 2019, in front of his daughter and awarded capital punishment after finding it to be “a rarest of rare case”. They had also chopped off a hand and lower limbs of the deceased and displayed the body parts to create fear among the public.The trial court relied on material and medico-legal evidence and depositions of 53 witnesses while awarding death sentence to the five.This is the fourth death sentence awarded by trial courts in two years for which the state govt has sought confirmation by the high court.
