Teen stabbed to death, 3 injured in group clash at Odisha's Dhurusia

CUTTACK: A 17-year-old boy was stabbed to death and three others were injured during a clash between two groups during the immersion of Ganesh idols in Athagarh’s Dhurusia area on Tuesday night.

The deceased has been identified as Suryakant Samal of Dhurusia under Khuntuni police station.

The incident occurred at around 10.10 pm when two idol immersion processions came face to face with each other in the middle of the village.

Police said the groups didn’t let each other move to the immersion area, following which tension escalated as both wanted to go first and then spiralled into a violent altercation.

Police said people in both groups attacked each other with knives and sticks. Suryakant was rushed to SCB Medical College and Hospital, where doctors declared him brought dead. The three injured are receiving treatment at various health facilities.

“A murder case has been registered at Khuntuni police station,” said SDPO Umakanta Nayak.

1,700 Ganesh idols immersed in waterbodies

Over 1,700 Ganesh idols were immersed in Coimbatore's waterbodies by right-wing organisations and political entities. The city police sanctioned the installation of 680 idols and assigned over 2,000 personnel for security measures. In rural regions, nearly 1,300 idols were immersed with approximately 1,500 officers ensuring safety during the processions.
