Potholes abound in road leading to Doon rly station

DEHRADUN: Navigating the main road outside the Dehradun railway station, which witnesses an average daily footfall of around 11,500 passengers, has become a nightmare for locals, daily commuters and tourists due to its deplorable condition.

"Traffic, sanitation and chaos have been a perpetual problem in the area. The monsoon season has revealed the subpar quality of the work undertaken here, leaving the entrance point of the city for many people in a mess," lamented Mahi Kaifi, a resident of the nearby railway colony. "The main road was repaired in May and June. But the newly laid road was excavated for sewerage work. When the rain started, haphazard patchwork was done, which made the road uneven and resulted in potholes. The road has become dangerous for small vehicles as well as two-wheelers," Kaifi added.

Residents said that the uncovered drains along the road and the lack of streetlights in the area further exacerbated the problem. A three-wheeler driver told TOI that traversing the railway station road takes more time compared to navigating the congested Saharanpur road that intersects it.

Railway officials agree that due to heavy rains this year, the temporary road repairs in the area did not hold up. "We have sent a proposal for the complete overhaul of the main road. The work should start within a fortnight. The whole stretch will now be concretised because that has a longer life," said station superintendent Shashank Sharma, adding plans are being formulated to address issues like traffic, drainage and congestion.
