5-star hospitality worth Rs 8 lakh fetches cheat 3-yr term
NEW DELHI: He dined like a king and enjoyed Taj Palace's hospitality to the hilt, only to run up a bill of over Rs 8 lakh which he did not have.
Now, this senior official of a UK-based firm and a Chennai native has been sent to jail for three years by a city court for cheating the five-star hotel.
The accused, Sarvanan Palaniapan, director operations of a UK-based firm, occupied room number 419 of the hotel at Sardar Patel Marg for over two months in 2002 and all through his stay he kept fooling the hotel staff about his paying capacity.

When produced before metropolitan magistrate Sidharth Sharma, Palaniapan pleaded guilty claiming that he had realised his mistake. The court sentenced him to imprisonment for three years.
The hotel staff, out of courtesy, kept reminding him politely that charges for his stay and his food and beverage bills had to be cleared in cash. But Palaniapan was a perfect con man.
When he allegedly sensed that his charm was not working any more on the hotel staff, he made a payment of about Rs 24,500 to soothe tempers. This was the only money that the hotel received from this guest who issued cheques for 5,800 pounds which bounced repeatedly due to lack of funds.

Palaniapan's stay at the hotel from August 15, 2002 to October 19, 2002, cost the hotel Rs 8.25 lakh. And a police complaint was filed in 2004 after repeated requests to the guest from November 2002 to May 2003 to clear his dues.
The convict was in a jail in Maharashtra in connection with a similar offence just before magistrate Sidharth Sharma sentenced him to imprisonment. Palaniapan was brought to the court specially at the time of the pronouncement of judgment.
On a plea by prosecutor N K Verma, the court took note of a telegram sent by superintendent of Pune jail who wanted to know about the sentence awarded to Palaniapan in the cheating case.
