NEW DELHI: The railway police had on March 17 its hands full with what was seemingly a case of kidnapping. A little probing revealed otherwise.
The cops realised that what they were dealing with was actually a confusing love story, with two husbands and "their" wife. The main protagonist in this tale is 24-year-old Snigdha (name changed).
According to the police, Snigdha approached a TTE at New Delhi railway station alleging that she had been forcefully brought to Delhi by a man from Lucknow.
She was referred to the railway police and she helped them catch the "accused" Saurav (name changed). The two were brought to the New Delhi railway station police station.
Saurav reportedly claimed that Snigdha was his wife and that they were married a year-and-a-half ago.
What seemed a little bizarre became complicated as Saurav said that Snigdha, after their wedding at an Arya Samaj temple in Lucknow, was convinced by her parents not to stay with him.
According to the police, Snigdha married a man of her parents'' choice in January this year. Both Snigdha and Saurav belong to Lucknow. Snigdha''s second husband is also from Lucknow.
Snigdha reportedly met Saurav on Tuesday morning while she had gone out of her in-laws'' house. They decided that they wanted to be together and came to Delhi by road in Saurav''s luxury sedan.
"They went to Saurav''s relatives'' house. She said that she could not stay at this house and they both decided to go somewhere else. They came to the railway station and deliberated through the night about where to go," said a police officer.
In the morning when Saurav went to buy train tickets for Jammu, she approached a TTE saying she had been brought to the city forcefully, said the police.
A zero FIR under Sections of illegal detention, threat and kidnapping had been registered in the case. The cops then decided to do the "next best thing" - call both their families and Snigdha''s second husband and his parents.
Saurav and Snigdha were taken to metropolitan magistrate Harish Dudhani''s court.
