BBA student dies after accidental firing with unlicensed pistol at Rohini party
New Delhi: A 21-year-old BBA student died after allegedly shooting himself in the stomach while handling an unlicensed pistol during a party in Rohini on Sunday.
The deceased, identified as Raja Singh, was a resident of the area. He worked at a private firm while pursuing his studies, police said. The incident occurred on Sunday evening at a friend’s house in Jain Nagar, under the Begumpur police station limits.
Police received information about the shooting around 6.30 pm, after Singh’s friends rushed him to a hospital with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
During preliminary questioning, police learnt that Singh had been partying with friends when he allegedly began showing them a .32-bore pistol and attempted to clean it. “While handling the weapon, it accidentally went off and the bullet hit him in the stomach,” a senior police officer said.
Singh was conscious and reportedly told police that the firing had occurred accidentally while he was handling the pistol. However, he succumbed to his injuries during treatment the following day, police said.
Investigators said the pistol involved was unlicensed. Police are trying to ascertain how Singh procured the firearm and whether it was used in any previous crime.
Statements of those present at the party are being recorded, and some persons have been detained for questioning. The weapon has been seized and sent for forensic examination.
Family members said Singh was the eldest of three brothers. His father works as a driver and his mother is a homemaker. One of his brothers is employed with a private company in Netaji Subhash Place, while another lives in their native village, police added.
