Their conversation turned into a heated argument when the girl requested Gaurav to end their alleged affair. In a fit of rage, he picked up a knife and stabbed Harman in her throat, stomach and hands that resulted in her immediate death, said a senior police officer.
On how cops reached Gaurav, he said: First, the modus operandi clearly suggested that the girl was murdered by someone who was known to her. The accused also knew about the absence of her parents and took advantage of it to enter the house and commit the crime.
Secondly, a couple of greetings cards led the police to Gaurav. It is alleged that in the past few days Gaurav had got intimate with Harman during which he had sent her some greeting cards. We seized the cards and based on some other evidence, we suspected that he was the prime accused. We had zeroed in on him on Friday night itself but he confessed to his crime only on Saturday during the interrogation, said Atul Katiyar, DCP outer district. The police had recovered the weapon from the spot itself and Harmans missing mobile was recovered from the accused later.
The girl had recently joined BBA course in a private management institute in Pitampura after finishing her schooling. While Harmans father is a government employee, her mother is a housewife and her elder sister who was recently married lives in London.
Her parents are inconsolable and relatives and neighbours are in a state of shock. Harman was always a smart and bold girl. Even as a child she was outspoken, said Raminder Singh, Harmans uncle who lives in Meerut. The next-door neighbours of the family were equally shaken by the incident. Said Rajiv Sehgal: Harman was a cute and a humble girl. Her gentle smile is hard to forget and I still cant believe that she is dead.

The murder has shaken other residents of the locality too as the area is considered one of the safest in the locality. Said DN Chawla who has been living there for the past 22 years: Apart from a couple of robberies, no crime has been reported in the pocket and even in the police records it is considered one of safest pockets.
The accused is a resident of nearby D 12 pocket in Rohini sector 7. His father, Ajay Kumar, runs a property dealing business in the same locality.
