NEW DELHI: East Delhi MP
Gautam Gambhir on Saturday urged
BJP national president Jai Prakash Nadda to “relieve” him of political duties, as he wanted to focus on his upcoming cricket commitments. The cricketer-turned-politician also thanked PM Narendra Modi and Union home minister Amit Shah for giving him the opportunity to serve the people.
The move comes amid the speculation that BJP was not keen to repeat him from the East Delhi parliamentary constituency in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls and was considering various names as his possible replacement.
“I have requested party president JP Nadda ji to relieve me of my political duties so that I can focus on my upcoming cricket commitments. I sincerely thank PM Narendra Modi ji and Home Minister Amit Shah ji for giving me the opportunity to serve the people. Jai Hind!” Gambhir said on X.
Gambhir had defeated former Delhi minister and incumbent state unit chief of Congress Arvinder Singh Lovely by over 3.9 lakh votes in 2019.
Sources claimed Gambhir was prepared to contest from the East Delhi seat this time also, but things changed after his meeting with BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Gambhir shared a donation slip of his contribution to PM Narendra Modi’s vision of “Viksit Bharat” on X and asked everyone to join the drive.
During his term, Gambhir made several rounds to Ghazipur landfill site and focussed on early disposal of legacy waste. He also vigorously pursued his initiatives of running community kitchens to provide free meals to poor and opening libraries.
