Yoga Day Shouldn't Be Reduced to a Symbolic Gesture
While I fully respect the ancient Indian tradition of yoga and its transformative power, I find the yearly fanfare around International Yoga Day increasingly hollow. It's disheartening to see political leaders – from Amit Shah downwards – participating in well-staged events when very few appear to embody the discipline, balance, or regular practice that yoga demands.
Yoga is not a one-day spectacle. It’s a lifelong journey requiring consistency and authenticity. Turning it into a PR exercise once a year, with little to no commitment during the rest of the year, reduces a profound tradition into mere tokenism.
If our leaders truly believe in promoting yoga, let it be seen in their daily lives – not just on camera. Otherwise, let’s not pretend that a single morning of stretching every June 21st will make the nation healthier.
