Indian students have strong learning and research capabilities, says LS speaker
New Delhi: Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Thursday said that Indian students possess exceptional capabilities in learning, research and knowledge acquisition. He added that those who dare to dream big are the ones who go on to achieve great things.
He was addressing students as the chief guest at the annual day celebrations of Maharaja Agrasen College, under University of Delhi. The event, held at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Auditorium, was presided over by Rajni Abbi, the director of south campus.
Several awards and scholarships were conferred on students to recognise academic and cultural excellence. The key honours included the Sanskriti Award, Sraestha Samyojak Award, Vidyotama Award and the Best Student Award. In addition, 13 memorial awards and scholarships were presented.
Birla highlighted the legacy of Maharaja Agrasen, after whom the college is named, describing him as a far-sighted leader whose ideals continue to inspire even today. “When one studies Agrasen’s life and vision, it becomes evident how visionary his leadership was. He set an enduring example of what ideal governance should look like. The values associated with his rule continue to remain relevant and inspiring even in today’s democratic framework,” he said.
On the occasion, the principal of the college, Sanjeev Kumar Tiwari, presented the annual report for 2026, noting that over 82% of final-year students passed with a first division, reflecting the institution’s academic performance.
Various college publications—including Gyan Sanchay, the Indian Journal of Social Enquiry and Flora at MAC—were also released. The event was attended by a large number of faculty members, non-teaching staff and students.
Birla further emphasised the importance of drawing lessons from historical figures, stating that future generations must remain connected to the ideas and contributions of great personalities. Referring to Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, he said that India has been shaped by leaders who laid the foundations of its democratic system, adding that the country’s democratic structure rests on their vision and efforts.
