New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested the personal assistant to a senior nephrologist of Apollo Hospital in connection with the kidney racket.
Brajesh Chauhan (40) was found <01Justify>to be involved in clearing five <01Justify>kidney transplant cases, which were brought to him by the kingpin, T Raj Kumar Rao.
Police have sought information about transplants at four more hospitals, including two well known ones in the city, to confirm Rao’s activities.
Interrogation of Chauhan has revealed that Rao was in touch with him since 2014 and during this time he had facilitated surgeries at different hospitals where he was working.
It was also found that Rao was in touch with a former associate in Jalandhar through his Facebook profile under the pseudonym, Raj Sangam, and had also accepted advance payments for two transplants.
Police suspect that few of the patients may have been medical tourists from Afghanistan and Africa.
Chauhan has told the police that when in Delhi, Rao used to go to hospitals posing as a medical representative and met the personal assistants of senior doctors who in turn got him details about the patients. Intially Rao used to approach them personally and offered them lucrative deals.
Officers said that Rao gradually started employing people -- with monthly salary of Rs 25,000 -- to manage his business.
Police suspect that apart from running the illegal kidney trade, Rao also invested money in making low budget films and television shows in Kolkata. He also featured in some of them.
During interrogations, Rao has been giving different versions about his meetings which are being verified.
