Photos: Delhi tunnel to house world's longest mural

The biggest outdoor public artwork till date is in South Korea, a 23,688 sq metre painting but, upon completion, Pragati Maidan tunnel will have covered 98,000 sq metres with art, official said.

The theme of the artwork is life through six seasons of India, said Him Chatterjee, Pragati Maidan project art consultant.

As the project is of national importance, all the festivals, from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, will be represented in the tunnel, Chatterjee said.

According to officials working on the project, the entire artwork, which has no break, will have a length of 3km.

The design comprises kinetic art, meaning that if a person enters from one end of the tunnel the artwork moves along with him, explained Chatterjee.

The tunnel’s unique artwork gives a true reflection of the culture of Delhi, where people from every part of the country live and contribute to the city’s life and loves.

Every citizen of this country will be able to relate to the artwork in the tunnel. It will be like moving through a cultural museum, Chatterjee said.

The target is to complete the tunnel by the end of February this year, a PWD officer said.
