NEW DELHI: Investigations into a double murder that took place in a government flat at Pushp Vihar on Tuesday have led police to a tailor’s shop in Malviya Nagar.
"This is where the prime suspect Jagdish, a tailor by profession, was employed and the place he was last seen on July 20, when he had told his employers he was going to Ramnagar in Uttarakhand on important work and asked for a salary advance," said Chhaya Sharma, DCP (south).
Jagdish came under police scanner, after police discovered the bodies of Jagdish’s wife Tara Devi, 35, and daughter Kajal, 13, at the house of his acquaintance, Kamla Devi, who said she did not know the victims at all. Devi claimed she was introduced to the women by Jagdish who said they needed a place to stay for some time. Sources said Devi did not object as Jagdish hailed from her native village. She allowed them inside her house shortly before she left for work. When she returned she found them dead while Jagdish was nowhere to be seen.
Sources say that contrary to what Jagdish told Kamla, he was no stranger to the city, having lived here for several years. His wife Tara Devi used to work as a house maid in Mehrauli area where the couple had taken a house on rent. But the marriage was troubled.
"The landlord claimed that the husband-wife fought constantly and that a couple of other tenants had moved out because of their behaviour," said an investigating officer.
Interestingly, Tara Devi had quit her job on July 15 after claiming she had to return home at Uttarakhand and had informed the landlord that they would be vacating their residence.
"We have found the address of Tara’s brother and the address of the accused in Ramnagar. We have sent teams to nab the accused,’’ said Sharma. The prime suspect, Jagdish, had claimed that he had come down from the hills early on Tuesday with his wife and daughter. While Jagdish is still missing, the bodies of his wife and daughter were found murdered in Devi’s kitchen. Police suspect that Jagdish had used the city as a transit point to get rid of his family. The murder motive is still unclear.
