Sheena Bora murder case: Supreme Court dismisses Indrani Mukerjea's plea to travel abroad

The Supreme Court has dismissed Indrani Mukerjea’s plea to travel abroad, emphasizing the need to conclude her trial within a year. The CBI opposed her travel request, stressing the sensitivity of the case, with 96 witnesses already testifying. A special court had earlier permitted her travel, but this decision was overturned by the high court.

NEW DELHI: The Supreme Court on Wednesday dismissed Indrani Mukerjea’s plea challenging a Bombay high court decision that barred her from traveling abroad.
A bench comprising Justices M M Sundresh and Rajesh Bindal instructed the trial court to conclude the proceedings within a year.
Opposing her request, the CBI’s counsel argued that the case is sensitive, the trial is halfway through, and 96 witnesses have already testified.
Mukerjea’s lawyer pointed out that she had been granted bail by the Supreme Court and that 92 witnesses were yet to be examined.
She also noted that the trial court had remained vacant for the past four months, which could further delay proceedings.
The travel restriction issue reached the Supreme Court after a special court, on July 19, permitted Mukerjea to visit Spain and the UK for 10 days within the next three months.
However, the CBI challenged this decision in the high court, which overturned the special court’s order on September 27. Mukerjea then approached the apex court against this ruling.
