NEW DELHI: The Times of India, New Delhi, was awarded the Delhi Safety Award for 1998 and 1999 by state chief minister Sheila Dikshit on Tuesday.
At a function organised by the Delhi Labour Welfare Board (DLWB), the TOI printing press was among other organisations that received the award.
Himalaya Drug Company, Relaxo Rubber, Modi Flour Mills, MDH Ltd, Kwality Ice Cream Co and Havells India Ltd were some of the other winners.
Dikshit also gave away the Delhi Shramik Sujhao Puraskar to employees whose suggestions led to cost cutting and enhanced efficiency in their companies. Employees of Badarpur Thermal Power Station and Britannia Industries were among those who won this award.
Announcing welfare schemes for labourers in Delhi, Dikshit said: ‘‘Housing facilities are being provided in upcoming industrial estates like Bawana and Narela. DLWB will soon start a Rajiv Gandhi Labour Blood Bank which will cater to poor labourers.’’
She said the definition of labourer did not extend to industrial workers alone but included those working in other fields like journalism as well.
DLWB chairman Sukhbir Sharma said a mobile creche would soon start visiting various construction sites. ‘‘It will also have medical facilities and teachers so that the labourers can get some vocational courses,’’ he said.
Delhi state labour minister Deep Chand Bandhu presided over the function.
