Two Killed in Separate Road Crashes Caused By Drunk Drivers
New Delhi: Two separate road accidents early on Sunday left two people dead and six injured.
In both instances, the drivers of the offending SUVs were found to be drunk and have been arrested.
The first incident occurred in the Vasant Kunj South police station area. A PCR call around 4.25 am informed the cops about a fatal crash on the Rajokri flyover, near Mahipalpur in southwest Delhi. The accident happened on the carriageway towards Gurgaon.
According to the police, an SUV allegedly rammed into a tempo from behind, causing it to overturn. The impact of the collision killed one woman and left six — three children, two women and a man — injured. The deceased woman was identified as Kripa Devi (47), while the injured include Ishan (2), Vansh (8), Naksh (14), Naina (34), Rahul (37) and Savitri Devi (60). They were all related to each other and were residents of Seelampur in northeast Delhi.
A call was also made to the fire service about the accident.
The women were homemakers. Rahul was driving the vehicle. The others were seated at the back of the tempo. They were travelling from Nand Nagri to Alwar to offer prayers at a temple.
The driver of the SUV, who appeared to be intoxicated, was nabbed at the spot and his medical examination was conducted. He was identified as Manuj, a 40-year-old property dealer travelling from Dhaula Kuan to his residence in Gurgaon.
In a second incident reported around the same time in west Delhi, an unidentified 55-year-old pedestrian was killed after being hit by a speeding SUV. The accident took place at 3.50 am at the Rajouri Garden intersection. The area is under the Moti Nagar police station.
The victim and the driver of the SUV were rushed to the hospital, where doctors declared the pedestrian brought dead.
The driver has been identified as 27-year-old Harshit Raj Dogra of Ramesh Nagar. Police said Dogra was driving under the influence of alcohol while returning home from Mansarovar Garden. A case has been registered and he has been arrested.
