3 arrested for killing trawler worker at Cavelossim

Colva: Colva police have arrested three people in connection with the murder of Shashi Lakra, 27, at Mobor, Cavelossim.

Police said Sanjay Manjhi, Asish Kumar and Jagnandan Sidar, along with Lakra, hailed from Chhattisgarh and were employed on a trawler stationed at Betul jetty.

According to investigators, on Saturday afternoon, four men had taken the trawler across the river to Mobor-Cavelossim for repair work. They had allegedly carried alcohol with them and began consuming it while on board.

During the drinking session, an argument broke out between Lakra and three others. The dispute escalated after Lakra allegedly kicked Sidar’s plate, enraging the others. The accused allegedly broke a glass bottle and attacked Lakra, stabbing him in the throat and killing him on the spot.

Police further stated that the three men hid the corpse in the bushes. It was discovered on Sunday by locals who alerted the police.

Initially, a case of unnatural death was registered. However, following the postmortem examination, a murder case was filed.

The accused were apprehended late Sunday night. Police are continuing their interrogation to determine the role played by each in the crime. The men have been remanded in 10 days police custody.
