Eng Desai blames contractor in building collapse case

MARGAO: Canacona municipal engineer Ajay Desai submitted before the special court, Margao, during the hearing of his bail application that contractor Vishwas Desai is responsible for the collapse of the Ruby Residency building at Chaudi, Canacona.
Ajay's counsel submitted that his client should be granted conditional bail as he was already cooperating with the police and that the police had arrested him only on the basis of suspicion.
Refuting all charges, Ajay's lawyer stated that if any inferior material was used in the construction of the building, then it should have been checked by the civil engineer or the supervisor at the building site. Ajay's lawyer argued that the blame lies with the contractor, Vishwas, who had signed the structural stability certificates.
The court adjourned the hearing for March 5. The court further extended Ajay's police custody for six more days, till March 7.
