FC Tuem’s fate hangs in balance as five teams remain in fray for IWL spot
Mapusa: FC Tuem could be left to rue the dropped points in three of their four games, ahead of the final round of matches in the Indian Women’s League (IWL) 2 final round at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa.
Tuem, Goa’s representatives, are unbeaten in IWL 2 but are placed fifth with just one point separating them and leaders Sreebhumi FC. On Sunday, luck was not on Tuem’s side as they rattled the crossbar in added time against Sreebhumi.
Had the result gone their way, it could have a been different story. Yet, not everything is lost. The Goa champions play Garhwal United FC at Duler on Tuesday at 8am and must win to stay in contention for a place in the IWL next season.
“We could have been in a better position if we had converted our chances in the last game,” said Tuem general secretary Stany Lobo.
Sreebhumi lead the standings with seven points. Two other teams, Pudhuvai Unicorn (Puducherry) and Nita FA (Odisha) are also on seven points.
Garhwal are fourth with six points, while Tuem are a place below them.
Nita FA should be favourites to seal one of the qualification spot, given they play SAG Football Academy, Gujarat, who have not managed to open their account in the competition and are bottom after four straight defeats.
“There is a good chance. We are trying for qualification. We are giving them (players) best advice. Everyone is putting their best efforts,” said Suvrat Das, chairman and founder of Nita FA.
Pudhuvai then face Sreebhumi at 8.30pm. Whichever team wins will qualify. If they draw, Tuem will take that spot, provided they register a win in the day’s morning game.
“Our match is scheduled in the morning and it is a disadvantage for us. Others can decide their fate. Our match is crucial. We have to win and wait for results of other matches,” said Stany.
