Calangute: The face of a waiter working at a shack was slashed by two Russian tourists at Calangute beach on Saturday afternoon following an altercation.
In the melee that followed, the two Russians attempted to flee from the shack by running and swimming in the water chased by a large number of locals who were armed with sticks and other weapons.
Lifeguards in the area rushed to help the Russian tourists who could have drowned and brought them safely to the shore.
Two Egyptian tourists, who were sitting alongside the Russians in the beach shack, got into an altercation with some lifeguards near the shack. They were also beaten up along with the Russians, while lifeguard Sachin Kamble suffered simple injuries. The incident occurred around 2.30pm, according to sources.
Lifeguards contacted the Calangute police, who rushed to the spot and took the four foreigners into custody.
They were later placed under arrest and on Sunday were remanded to four days in police custody by the judicial magistrate first class, Mapusa.
The Russians were identified as Kosya Belyoev and Vasya Nadtochii, while the Egyptians were identified as Fahd Jamal and Mohamed Galib.
The injured waiter, Sheikh, has been admitted to Goa Medical College and Hospital, Bambolim, and police sources that his mouth was completely slashed open.
The shack owner, Simon D'Souza, has lodged a complaint with the police. PSI Nitin Harlarnkar is conducting further investigations.
