PANAJI: Even lotus ponds are being used for dumping of garbage, the
Shiv Sena has pointed out, writing to the panchayats of Canca and Parra in Bardez that the two neighbouring villages are gripped with a major garbage crisis.
In a letter to the Parra sarpanch, Shiv Sena ad-hoc committee member Philip D`Souza said that the residents of Jackni vaddo at Parra have been complaining that a field is being used as a garbage dump, causing a nuisance and a health threat to the area.
"Although, there are sign boards put up by the panchayat prohibiting the dumping of garbage in this area, it seems that the prohibition has not been effectively enforced. Birds and stray animals add to the nuisance at this garbage site by carrying the rotting garbage and dropping it on the houses or compounds of the neighboring residents. This creates a lot of discomfort to the people living around,`` the letter to the Parra sarpanch stated.
The Shiv Sena has requested for garbage bins around Parra village, which should be cleared on a daily basis. It also informed the panchayat that most of the street lights don`t work on the main road.
Meanwhile, in a letter to the Canca sarpanch, D`Souza stated that a lotus pond at Canca on the Mapusa-Calangute road is filled with rotting garbage for the past several days.
The Shiv Sena pointed out that the road is frequented by tourists — both national and international. `Due to the nature of the garbage dumped in this pond, it has also become a breeding place for mosquitoes and a health hazard,`` D`Souza stated.
