5th Chandu Budhera unit by May, to enhance water supply to Gurgaon’s new sectors
Gurgaon: For thousands of families who moved into highrises along Southern Peripheral Road (SPR) and Dwarka Expressway, summer often brings a familiar worry of taps running dry or reliance on private tankers. This year, however, some relief may finally be in sight, as the fifth unit of 100 MLD at the Chandu Budhera water treatment plant is expected to be ready by May.This will improve supply in the new sectors between 81 and 115.
The project was awarded in March 2024 at an estimated cost of Rs 52.5 crore, with a 2-year completion timeline. Once functional, the city's overall water filtration capacity will increase from 670 MLD to 770 MLD."The fifth 100 MLD unit at Chandu Budhera is in its final stages, with 72% completed, and efforts are being made to get it ready by May. Once operational, it will cater to sectors 81 to 115, including areas along SPR and Dwarka Expressway," a GMDA official said. Currently, GMDA supplies 670 MLD of water daily — 400 MLD from the Chandu Budhera plant and the remaining from the Basai facility. According to GMDA, the city's projected peak demand for water supply will be around 750 MLD this year.A boosting station in Sector 72 is also likely to be commissioned by March, which is likely to improve the supply along SPR. The Sector 72 boosting station, estimated to cost Rs 63 crore and spread over 4 acres, faced repeated setbacks. The foundation for the 240 MLD facility was laid in June 2019, with completion initially planned within 9 months. Work slowed during the Covid-19 pandemic and was later affected by annual construction bans in the NCR."The machinery at the boosting station in Sector 72 has already been tested, and pipeline-laying work is in progress. We are hoping to commission it before the summer," the GMDA official added.Areas along SPR depend on the Sector 51 boosting station, which is unable to meet peak demand. This led several residential societies to rely on private water tankers.
