Gusty winds, showers and cloud cover bring relief from heat in Gurgaon, more in store
Gurgaon: A spell of thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds is likely to bring relief from the summer heat across Haryana over the next few days, with India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting unsettled weather till June 8.
On Thursday, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 40-60 kmph were reported from parts of the state, including Gurgaon, Faridabad, Taoru, Sohna, Ballabhgarh, Bahadurgarh, Rohtak and Sonipat.
The change in weather was reflected in temperatures. Gurgaon recorded a maximum temperature of 39.1°C at IMD’s KVK observatory, below the normal maximum of 40.3°C for this time of the year. The minimum temperature stood at 27.8°C, compared with the normal of 25.4°C. The city also received light rainfall, with 1.5 mm recorded at the KVK observatory, according to IMD data.
Across Haryana, Rohtak recorded the highest maximum temperature of 43.1°C on Thursday. Temperatures in several districts remained near or below normal due to cloud cover and intermittent rainfall. Palwal received the highest rainfall in the state, recording 34 mm during the 24-hour period ending Thursday evening.
Meteorological Centre, Chandigarh, has issued a yellow alert for several districts, including Gurgaon, for Friday. According to IMD’s weekly weather report, an active western disturbance and associated upper-air cyclonic circulations over northwest India are influencing weather conditions across the region. The system is expected to trigger widespread thunderstorm activity across Haryana until June 6, with the intensity likely to reduce thereafter.
The district-wise forecast indicates thunderstorm activity will continue across large parts of the state on Friday, particularly in southern, central and eastern districts. Weather warnings are expected to ease significantly by June 7 and 8.
Officials have advised residents to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and stay away from electric poles and trees, as strong winds and lightning may pose safety risks.
