Haryana shocker: 25-year-old woman travelling in e-rickshaw crushed to death after drunk cop's car rams vehicle
AMBALA: A 24-year-old woman working at a private company in Gurgaon was killed after a car allegedly driven at high speed by a police head constable rammed into her e-rickshaw in Ambala Cantonment, police said.
The incident occurred on Wednesday evening near the Kali Paltan Bridge.
The accused cop has been identified as Amit Kumar, a head constable of Haryana Police, who was posted in Baldev Nagar police station in Ambala City area.
The accused has been arrested.
According to news agency PTI, the woman, identified as Nikita Bajaj, had arrived in Ambala earlier in the day from Delhi along with her brother, Harsh Bajaj.
According to police, at around 8.30pm the siblings boarded an e-rickshaw from the Cantonment area to travel to Ambala City for a family function.
As the vehicle approached Ambala City, a Honda City car allegedly driven at high speed by a head constable posted at Lalkurti Police Station struck it from behind.
Police said the impact caused the e-rickshaw to lose control, throwing Nikita onto the road. The car then ran over her. She was taken to the trauma centre of the Civil Hospital in Ambala City, where doctors declared her dead.
The e-rickshaw driver, Ravinder Singh, described the moments leading up to the crash. “The car was being driven by a policeman at high speed. As a result of the impact, the woman fell on the road, and the car being driven by the policeman ran over her,” he said.
Singh said locals gathered at the scene, caught the driver and handed him over to police.
Some eyewitnesses and relatives of the woman alleged that the officer was in an inebriated condition at the time of the accident and accused police of attempting to shield their colleague.
Nikita’s father, Jaspal Bajaj, demanded strict legal action and a fair investigation, alleging negligence on the part of the accused.
Tension prevailed at the hospital’s trauma centre late into the night as relatives and others staged a protest, demanding that the medical examination of the accused be conducted in the presence of the media. Additional police personnel were deployed to maintain order.
Police said the allegations are being examined and that the matter remains under investigation. A post-mortem examination is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday.
According to her family, Nikita had been working in Gurgaon for the past four years, while her brother is employed as a supervisor at a hotel in New Delhi.
