Guwahati: Assam Police successfully rescued a one-year-old girl, who was sold by her step-grandfather about 11 months ago, from the Sontali area in Kamrup district.
Guwahati Police's deputy commissioner (east), Mrinal Deka, told the media on Tuesday that the step-grandfather and another person were arrested for trafficking the minor in exchange of Rs 5,000. The child has been safely recovered.
"On Monday, we received a complaint from the mother, a resident of an area near the Games Village, that her stepfather had taken away the child on May 30 last year on the pretext of medical treatment in the absence of her husband," he added.
The woman later discovered that her one-month-old daughter was sold by her stepfather for Rs 5,000, Deka said.
Following this revelation, authorities registered a case at Basistha police station and launched an investigation. A police team successfully located and rescued the child.
