Dibrugarh: Despite foggy skies and a persistent winter chill, hundreds of picnickers thronged popular outdoor destinations across Dibrugarh on Wednesday, determined to celebrate the final day of the year amid nature’s embrace along the banks of the Brahmaputra and the Buridehing.
The year-end tradition of outdoor gatherings remained undiminished as families, friends and groups of enthusiastic revellers descended upon the district’s scenic picnic spots, transforming riverbanks and parks into vibrant hubs of celebration. The foggy weather, which had prompted road safety concerns from district authorities, proved no deterrent to those seeking to usher in the new year with outdoor festivities.
The sandy expanses of Bogibeel Ghat along the Brahmaputra emerged as one of the most popular destinations, with picnickers arriving from early morning to secure prime spots along the waterfront. The vast stretches of sand, offering panoramic views of the river, attracted large groups who set up elaborate picnic arrangements complete with cooking equipment, music systems and recreational gear.
“We come here every year on the last day of Dec. The fog adds a certain mystique to the atmosphere. Yes, it’s cold, but that’s part of the experience. We wouldn’t miss this for anything,” said Bornali Phukan, a resident of Dibrugarh.
Maijan Ghat, another popular spot along the Brahmaputra, witnessed similar scenes of festivity. The location, known for its accessibility and scenic beauty, was packed with picnic parties of varying sizes, from intimate family gatherings to large groups of college students celebrating the year’s end together.
Aai Than and Joggers Park, both situated beside the Brahmaputra, also saw significant footfall throughout the day. These locations, popular for their well-maintained grounds and riverside ambiance, attracted both local residents and visitors from neighbouring areas. The foggy conditions created ethereal views of the river, with the mist rolling over the water adding a dramatic backdrop to the celebrations.
“The weather is actually quite pleasant for a picnic. The fog makes everything look beautiful, almost magical. We’ve been planning this outing for weeks, and we are glad we didn’t let the weather forecast discourage us,” Priyanka Dutta, a college student said celebrating at Joggers Park with her friends.
The banks of the Buridehing proved equally popular, with spots like Khamti Ghat and Harey Ghat filled with merrymakers throughout the day. These locations, slightly removed from the main urban centre, offered a more secluded atmosphere while still providing the riverside charm that makes year-end picnics special in Dibrugarh.
“We chose the Buridehing banks this year for a bit more seclusion, but it seems everyone had the same idea. Even with the cold, the energy here is amazing. It’s the perfect way to recharge before the New Year begins,” said Bhaskar Buragohain, a businessman from the city, celebrating with his friends at Khamti Ghat.
