Guwahati: A notorious chain snatcher, injured in police firing in the city's Chachal area on Tuesday, succumbed to his injuries at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) on Wednesday evening.
Mrinal Deka, DCP of Guwahati (East) Division, informed the media that a team of officers from Dispur police station tracked the suspect, Ramesh Daimary, and his accomplice, Mohidul Hoque alias Andar, to Assam's Nalbari district using technological surveillance on Tuesday. Both suspects were brought to Guwahati for questioning.
During interrogation, Daimary disclosed that a firearm used in a recent snatching incident at Jalukbari was hidden in the Chachal area. A police team, accompanied by Daimary, proceeded to the location. During the search operation, Daimary retrieved the hidden weapon and attempted to fire at the police. In retaliation, officers shot him in the leg.
Deka said Daimary was immediately taken to GMCH for treatment but succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday evening. "The post-mortem examination is currently underway at GMCH, following a magisterial inquest," Deka added.
