GUWAHATI/SILCHAR/AIZAWL/ IMPHAL/AGARTALA/SHILLONG: Eid-ul-Fitr was celebrated with pomp and grandeur across the northeast on Saturday, with prayers being offered in Eidgah maidans with devotion.
The celebrations remained peaceful in the northeast and without reports of any untoward incident.
In Guwahati, Eid prayers were offered at Machkhowa Eidgah, Burha Jame Masjid, Jalukbari Eidgah Maidan and Hatigaon Eidgah among several other locations in the city. Mosques were decked up a couple of days ahead of the festival in different parts of the state.
Assam governor Gulab Chand Kataria said, “May the celebration of Eid-ul-Fitr bind us all with the thread of friendship to universal brotherhood to rededicate ourselves to the cause of humanity.”
Chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma hoped that this festival will augur an ambience for joy, happiness and prosperity. “Let this festival be an occasion for Eid prayers, charity, feasting, friendship and harmony.”
Thousands of Muslims in the three districts of Barak Valley — Cachar, Karimganj and Hailakandi and neighbouring Dima Hasao gathered at the Idgah maidans in respective towns and villages to offer namaz.
Hundreds of Muslims offered prayers at Chaltlang football ground in Mizoram’s capital Aizawl city on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr. Eid was also celebrated with pomp and gaiety in Tripura in traditional fervour. As part of the observation in Manipur, the Keithelmanbi battalion of the Assam Rifles celebrated the day with the locals of Lilong area at Jama Masjid in Thoubal district.
In Meghalaya, devotees, attired in traditional regalia, offered namaz at the glass-made Madina Mosque at Laban.
