PM Modi to flag off the Bairabi–Sairang rail line
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurates the Bairabi–Sairang railway line on September 13, marking a historic moment as Aizawl connects to the Indian Railways network for the first time in history.
Engineering marvel through hills
Stretching 51.38 km, the line traverses Mizoram’s rugged terrain with 48 tunnels, 55 major bridges, and 87 minor bridges — a feat of railway engineering.
Aizawl joins Capital rail map
With this project, Aizawl becomes the fourth northeastern capital city after Guwahati, Agartala, and Itanagar to be connected to the Indian Railways network, opening avenues for trade, tourism, and economic growth.
Bridge taller than Qutub Minar
Among the highlights is Bridge No. 196, which rises to 104 metres — 42 metres taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar — making it the second-highest bridge in the Northeast.
Boost to regional connectivity
The new rail link connects Mizoram’s capital to the national railway grid via Silchar, reducing dependence on road transport and improving access to markets.
Game-changer for Mizoram
Constructed at a cost of Rs 8,215 crore, the project is expected to transform Mizoram by lowering transport costs, boosting trade and tourism, creating jobs, and accelerating socio-economic development.
Launch of express trains
As part of the inauguration, PM Modi will flag off three new express trains — Aizawl–Delhi Rajdhani Express, Aizawl–Kolkata Express, and Aizawl–Guwahati Express — offering new travel options.
