KHUMTAI: Who is
Sonia Gandhi? Many in Khumtai who came to attend her election rally think "she is the Prime Minister of India". And who's
Tarun Gogoi? "He is the Prime Minister of Assam".
Some even did not even understand what the UPA chairperson and AICC supremo said at the rally. "She is speaking in Hindi and I can't understand anything. I think she is asking us to vote for the Congress," said Mohendra Bhumij, a tea worker.
His companion, Chenaijan Deori, said he did not grasp anything at all, but agreed that "Sonia Gandhi is the country's Prime Minister and Gogoi Assam's.
Two young boys, who came all the way from their homes, about 10 km from Khumati, on bicycles, said they had heard someone was coming by a helicopter. "I think she is a Congress man," Jagdish Gogoi said. His friend, Tilak Gohain, was more specific. "She is Rajiv Gandhi's wife." But, there were exceptions too. Saifudduin Ahmed has the details by heart. "Sonia Gandhi is the AICC president and Tarun Gogoi is the chief minister of Assam."
The road to Doria ground, the venue for Sonia's rally, had all the colours of a political function. There were vehicles in hundreds and so were bicycles. Hundreds were seen walking. Either side of the road had makeshift shops lined up. There were stalls selling paan, tamul, light snacks and tea. "This is business time. This is the first time that such an important person has come here. I wish this happens everyday," said a man selling sprouts.
If there were thousands of Congress supporters at the ground, the number of security-men was in no way no less. The entire area was filled with SSB personnel in battle fatigues and armed to the teeth. Not an inch of the ground around the venue was left uncovered. As the two choppers, one carrying Sonia and the other Gogoi, were spotted almost simultanously, thousand hands were raised towards the sky. "Wish they were here every day," muttered a man, perhaps unaware that the "festival" called election does not happen every year.
