Couple weds before Ambedkar statue in Bidar
Kalaburagi: In a first-of-its-kind event in Bidar district, a rare and exemplary marriage has taken place, setting a new social precedent. Siddhartha and Sanjeevani, followers of Dr BR Ambedkar’s principles, ushered in this meaningful tradition.
The couple, who wanted to begin married life with a sense of social commitment rather than strictly following religious scriptures, drew public attention by taking vows and offering prayers in front of Babasaheb’s statue at Ambedkar Circle in the city. The ceremony was held on May 11 in accordance with Buddhist practices. The bride and groom expressed their resolve to incorporate Ambedkar’s life message and the ideals of the Constitution into their marriage.
The wedding took place at Dr BR Ambedkar Circle under the Babasaheb’s statue in Bidar. The bride, Sanjeevani, wore a red-and-white sari, while the groom, Siddhartha, dressed in traditional panche-shalya, stood with folded hands and took vows, evoking a sense of devotion and pride among those present.
Prof Dr Rajkumar Bannera of BRIMS, who attended the event, appreciated the couple’s decision to base their married life on the principles of great leaders, calling it an inspiring example for today’s youth. The simple ceremony was conducted without band-baja, mangalsutra tying, or haldi rituals.
The wedding was modest, costing just Rs 10,000 for the bride and groom’s attire, while Rs 5,000 was spent on food for the 20 attendees, Bannera said. The marriage demonstrated that ideological values can take precedence over extravagant traditions.
Family members Suresh Shinde, Shreya Banner, Vihaan, along with close friends and well-wishers, attended the programme and witnessed this historic moment.
