Bagalkot: A verbal altercation occurred on Saturday between BJP and Congress workers over the alleged distribution of threatening pamphlets to students.
BJP workers handed over Congress NSUI activists, accusing them of distributing pamphlets near S Nijalingappa Medical College, to police. More than 15 people were involved in the distribution, and BJP workers staged a protest in front of the traffic police station, demanding their arrest.
BJP functionaries Raju Revanakar and Basavaraj Hunagund claimed that NSUI activists wearing saffron shawls were distributing pamphlets on the college premises. The pamphlets featured a photo of BJP candidate Veeranna Charantimath with an ‘X' mark, stating that voting for the BJP would result in a jail sentence. They also alleged that more than 15 people distributed pamphlets, and activists from other towns caused confusion among students by wearing saffron shawls. "Congress is engaging in low-level politics out of fear of losing," they said.
Congress district president SG Nanjayyanamath and Siddu Konnur, who arrived at the station, demanded the release of the activists. BJP and Congress functionaries argued at the station, after which police sent everyone outside. DSP Gajanan Sutar and CPI Ashok Chavan were present.
