HYDERABAD: The city and most other districts of
Telangana are experiencing an extended break in monsoon, which has led to the heat levels being higher than usual.
While a break in monsoon is usually for a week to 10 days, this time it has extended for two weeks, starting from August 1, and continuing till August 14.
In the last one week, Hyderabad has seen higher than normal temperature all through the week, with highest temperatures recorded on August 10 and 11 at 32.8° Celsius.
The temperature deviations were as high as 2.5° on the days.
"This break monsoon period is turning out to be one of the longest spells for Telangana in recent years as it looks like it will continue for a week more. Though rains will increase from August 20 it will not be up to the mark. It is likely an impact of the El Nino," said T Balaji, a weather observer from the city, adding that previously in 2021, a the state saw a 23-day long monsoon break.
Meanwhile, the situation is no better across the state with high heat levels up to 38° Celsius recorded in Nalgonda - the highest in the state.
In fact, as per data from Telangana State Development Planning Society, the deficit in rains has climbed to -81% in the month of August as against the 114% excess rains last month.
As per latest IMD's update the rains will increase from August 20 onwards, with significant rise only after August 26. "Presently only a cyclonic circulation in Bay of Bengal which could have brought rains has become less marked, leading to not significant moisture load," said an official from IMD.
